WASHINGTON — As the nation prepares for upcoming elections, the nonprofit campaign Vet the Vote is rallying veterans and military families to step up as poll workers. With over 115,000 polling locations nationwide, finding enough volunteers to ensure smooth and secure elections is becoming increasingly difficult.
Vet the Vote, a national nonpartisan initiative, is addressing this challenge by encouraging those who have already served their country to continue their dedication in a new way—by helping run elections.
“Every election, towns and counties across America rely on volunteers to make sure everything runs smoothly,” said Chris Lancia, a spokesperson for the campaign. “But the truth is, it’s getting harder to find enough people willing to help. That’s where veterans and military families can make a difference.”

In 2022, more than 63,500 veterans and their families answered the call, ensuring the integrity of local elections. The campaign is now calling on others to join this effort. Vet the Vote emphasizes that their work is not about politics but about patriotism, supporting democracy, and ensuring that every vote counts.
“We’re not here to push a political agenda,” Lancia explained. “We’re here to make sure the democratic process runs safely, securely, and efficiently. This is about serving our country in another important way.”
The campaign offers training for volunteers, ensuring they are prepared for their role at the polls. For many, becoming a poll worker is an extension of the values they held while in service to the nation.
“Veterans and military families know what it means to serve,” Lancia said. “This is another opportunity to show that Americans can still come together in patriotic service, regardless of political differences.”
With the next election cycle approaching, Vet the Vote is calling on veterans and military family members to sign up and volunteer. Their participation ensures that local elections run smoothly, giving communities the confidence that their votes will be counted fairly and accurately.
“Vote, volunteer, and support those who do,” Lancia urged. “Together, we can protect our democracy and continue to serve the nation.”
