Online news network flags military veterans as targets in election interference scheme

A new online news network, posing as a legitimate source of information, has been specifically targeting veterans with content aimed at sowing doubt in America’s democratic processes, according to a report by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). The website, named Not Our War, is flagged by FDD as potentially linked to Iranian operatives, raising concerns about foreign influence ahead of the upcoming election.

The site appears to cater to veterans with a dedicated tab, but it also targets other groups, including Black, Spanish-speaking, and Muslim communities. Max Lesser, a senior analyst at FDD, highlighted the website’s dual strategy, stating, “The broader aim of the website is to discredit U.S. military actions across the board, but there is a specific focus on targeting veterans.”

This tactic of manipulating veterans and other vulnerable groups with disinformation or inflammatory content is not new. Foreign actors have previously leveraged digital platforms to exploit trust within these communities, attempting to create discord and influence opinions.

However, experts say there are ways to identify and protect against these attempts. By staying informed and sharing insights, veterans and other Americans can help safeguard themselves and their communities from disinformation aimed at undermining democratic values.
