Old-school vets VFW, Legion and DAV battling for your benefits

As federal workforce changes raise concerns among veterans, several major veterans service organizations are stepping up efforts to protect benefits, secure jobs, and push for legislative reforms.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is assisting veterans impacted by recent and potential government layoffs, including those facing a Reduction in Force (RIF). The organization is helping veterans understand their rights under Veterans’ Preference—a policy designed to provide eligible service members with an advantage in federal hiring and retention.

The American Legion has also taken significant steps to support the veteran community. The organization recently helped secure a record-breaking level of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation—offered at no cost to veterans. In addition, the Legion awarded more than $800,000 in grants aimed at promoting child wellness. The group is also actively lobbying Congress to pass emergency spending legislation to prevent disruptions in VA disability payments.

Meanwhile, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) continues to advocate for improved health care access and expanded job opportunities for veterans. The group is backing H.R. 303, known as the Retired Pay Restoration Act, which seeks to eliminate the offset between military retired pay and VA disability compensation for certain veterans. DAV is encouraging public support for the bill and is also hosting veteran-focused job fairs nationwide.

With multiple policy issues affecting veterans under consideration in Washington, officials from these organizations urge veterans to remain informed, engaged, and connected with verified sources of information and advocacy networks.

“These groups are not only honoring their legacy, they’re addressing modern-day challenges facing veterans today,” said one advocate. “Whether it’s job protection, disability pay, or long-term care, they’re on the front lines.”

Veterans seeking assistance or ways to get involved are encouraged to contact their local VFW, American Legion, or DAV chapter.
